Abstract
Unlike conventional large-scale epidemics, where social effects are proportional to pathological impact, the MERS epidemic episode in South Korea 2015 exerted a great social influence compared with the relatively weak extent of direct pathological influence. While epidemiologic investigations and statistics on the actions of governments and medical institutions during the outbreak have been studied profoundly, social impacts such as public’s fear against the disease, public perception of the government’s role, and social disquiet and tensions felt by citizens were rarely dealt by researchers due to lack of large-scale social data and systematic methods to analyze quantitatively. In this study, we quantitatively analyze the social effects caused by MERS in 2015 from three perspectives using 1,840,550 utterances (tweets) and responses (retweets) of users on Twitter in South Korea. First, we show that the spreading pattern of MERS-related information was highly heterogeneous during the epidemic period. Next, to understand characteristics of the highly spread tweets, we examine the trend of dominant contextual topics and lexical characteristics of the tweets over time. Finally, we uncover the differences in temporal characteristics and communication patterns in information spreading behavior between two user groups, public and government. The presented case study provides a comprehensive approach for understanding social behaviors in the case of future epidemic outbreaks.
