Abstract

After the reform and opening up, driven by the market mechanism and the policy of “encouraging some people to get well-off earlier”, socialist economic construction has been launched rapidly. With industrialization, urbanization and the upgrade of industrial structure, not only social structure transforms gradually, but social class poses a trend of differentiation and solidification. In fact, problems of social class had appeared early in the early 1990s. In recent years, violation of discipline by the “affluent second generation”, “officiallings” and “second generation of stars” are reported by social media enormously. As a result, problems of social class emerge. Meanwhile, in the field of mass culture, works reflecting problems on social class, such as TV play Ode to Joy have made their appearance one after another. In this paper, the TV play Ode to Joy is selected for the discussion of problems on social class, centering around the class prospect therein; study is made to the differentiation of class, how to differentiate, class solidification and how to solidify. First of all, the existing research findings are summarized and concluded. Secondly, class attributions of the people in the play are combed by referring to the social class division benchmark. Differences and gaps between the various classes are presented from consumption level, interest appeal, behavioral traits, disputes and other perspectives. Finally, the reasons of acquiring class status by the middle class are analyzed from family background, education, social network and class mobility.
