레오 스트라우스는 현대 정치학이 정치철학과 멀어지고 과학적 그리고 역사적정치학으로 변질된 이유를 ‘근대성’에서 찾는다. 스트라우스는 ‘근대성의 세 물결’에서 니체를 역사주의 철학자라고 비판하며 근대성의 세 번째 물결로 상정하고, 그를 근대적 사유의 대표적 인물로 설정한다. 스트라우스는 니체를 니힐리즘의 상징적 인물로 비판하지만, 니체와 스트라우스는 서로 유사한 모습을 보이고 있는 것이 사실이다. 두 사람 모두 니힐리즘의 극복을 시도했으나실패하였던 것이다. 니체는 ‘권력에의 의지’가 ‘힘’에 의해서 제약되는 현실 즉‘권력(Macht)’과 ‘힘(Kraft)’의 간극으로 인해 니힐리즘의 극복에 실패하였고, 스트라우스는 역사와 철학을 거친 이분법으로 구분하여 니힐리즘을 극복하지 못하였다. 또한 이들은 ‘위버멘쉬(Übermensch)’와 ‘철학자(a philosopher)’라는 상징적 인물에 자신의 철학을 투영하는 영웅주의적 성격을 보이기도 한다. 그들은 모두자신이 설정한 인물에 교육과 통치의 정당성을 부여함으로써 평등주의적 민주주의라는 현대의 가치를 회의적 시각으로 바라본 것이다. 레오 스트라우스는고대 합리주의와 근대 합리주의의 대결을 통해 니체와 자신의 철학을 대척점에 위치시키고자 했지만, 스트라우스와 니체는 서로 구조적 유사성을 보이고있는 것이 사실이다. 니체와 스트라우스, 그들은 니힐리즘을 넘어서서 새로운대안을 제시하고자 했지만 결국 니힐리스트가 되고 말았다.
Abstract
Leo Strauss thought that the reason why politics was alienated frompolitical philosophy was ‘modernity’, which made politics into historicalpolitics or scientific politics. In his essay “The three waves of modernity”,therefore, Strauss criticised Nietzsche for his historical philosophy,regarding him as a typical modernist. Although Strauss thought thatNietzsche was a nihilistic philosopher, in some ways Strauss and Nietzscheare structurally analogous to each other. They both failed to cope withnihilism. In Nietzsche's case, his central concept of ‘Wille zur Macht ’, waslimited by Kraft, so that the tension between Macht and Kraft made itdifficult to deal with nihilism. In Strauss' case, he was unable to reconcile history and philosophy. In fact, they bear a striking resemblance to each other：Nietzscheexpressed his own philosophy through Übermensch (overman or superman)；and for Strauss, the ‘ancient philosopher’ epitomizes his philosophy. Thus, they both employ similarly heroic characters to oppose contemporaryegalitarian democracy. Despite their intention to develop a new kind ofpolitical philosophy, Nietzsche and Strauss both ultimately became nihilists.
