레오 스트라우스의 역사주의 비판과 고전정치철학의 재발견

초록

이 논문은 역사주의에 대한 레오 스트라우스의 비판을 검토하고, 역사주의로 인해 왜곡된 정치철학 본연의 역할을 재조명하고자 하였다. 논문은먼저 역사주의가 급진적 역사주의로 전환되는 과정에 관한 스트라우스의설명을 검토하고, 이어서 이러한 역사주의의 전환 과정이 근대성의 큰 흐름 속에서 어떤 의의를 갖는가를 검토하였다. 논문은 특히 전체에 대한 탐구를 통해 올바른 삶의 기준을 마련하고자 했던 고전정치철학과 달리, 근대 역사주의가 좋음에 관한 가치판단을 보류하고, 오로지 현상에 대한 탐구만을 가능케 했다는 스트라우스의 비판에 주목하였다. 마지막으로 논문은 스트라우스가 근대 역사주의를 극복하기 위해 제안했던 고전정치철학의 회복을 검토하고, 이를 통해 근대 정치철학의 발전과정에서 상실된 정치철학 본연의 역할을 재음미하였다.

Abstract

The paper examines Strauss’s critique of historicism and his endorsement of classical political philosophy. Strauss argues that the radicalization of historicism brought in a deplorable consequence that the political philosophy lost sight of its meaning. The paper aims at examining the validity of Strauss’s well-known claim that the rehabilitation of political philosophy requires rediscovery of classical political philosophy. To do this,the paper first deals with Strauss’s trajectory explanation of historicism from its birth to introverted breakdown due to the “radicalization.” Next, the paper explains how Strauss understands the transformation of historicism in the degenerating tradition of modern political philosophy in terms of three waves of modernity. Finally, the paper evaluates Strauss’s arguments for endorsing the classical political philosophy as a cure for the marginalized role of political philosophy.
