이 글은 미국 아프로쿠바계 이민사에서 중요한 역사적 기록을 담은 에벨리요 그리요의 『쿠바 흑인, 미국 흑인』과 두 영화 작품을 중심으로, 아프리카계 미국인이자 라티노로 살아가는 주인공들의 다중적 정체성에 대해 고찰하고, 그들이 미국의 인종차별적 분위기에 저항하고 적응하는 모습에 대해 분석한다. 또한 쿠바계 미국인 공동체에서 드러나는 ‘신백인화’ 현상의 배경과 원인, 아프로라티노와 아프리카계 미국인을 연결하는 인종적 유대의 어려움에 대해 논한다. 1980년대 이후 아프로쿠바인의 유입 이후 반흑인 인종주의가 증가하는 데에는 쿠바 내 아프리카계 인구가 겪는 사회경제적 어려움, 미국 디아스포라 공동체의 백인 중심주의, 미국 주류사회가 쿠바계 이민자를 바라보는 편향적 이미지 등 다양한 요인이 작동하고 있다. 이는 아프로라티노가 추구하는 탈식민적 사고, 아프리카계 디아스포라의 역동적 다양성, 포스트인종적 사회를 지향하는 평등한 혼종성에 모두 역행하는 흐름임을 살펴본다.
Abstract
The article analyzes the conflicting understandings regarding the recognition of anti-black racism in Cuban American communities, drawing from controversial debates about Evelio Grillo’s memoir, Marielitos and stigmatized images about Afro Cuban immigrants. It reveals that the recent movement of “neo-whitening” is openly brought up alongside with the dominance and celebration of whiteness of Cuban American diaspora in the U.S. While focusing on anti-black racism embedded in both the dominant society and the Latino community, it tries to propose the reconceptualization of ‘Afro-Latinidad’ based on multiple racial identities of Afro-Cuban Americans.
