Abstract
In 1492, Columbus sailed to the western ocean and believed he had reached Indias. This article analyzes documents related to Columbus’s first voyage to determine what Columbus’s Indias were and in what context this name could later be used to refer to the American continent. India is derived from the Sanskrit word Sindhuh and in ancient Greece referred to the eastern end of Asia, but in the Middle Ages, the plural form Indias began to be used to refer to the East in a vague manner. In the documents of Columbus’s first voyage, it is established that he visited Indias, or the East. Even after America was proposed as the name of the fourth continent by Waldseemüller in 1507, Spain did not abandon the name Indias and began using Indias Occidentales. Indias, a name that was inherently ambiguous, was widely used until the 19th century and lost its validity only in the 20th century.
