· 연구 주제: 정치 영역에서의 합리주의적 사고를 경계하고 실용주의를 수용함으로써 갈등을 해결해 나가려는 태도가 중요함을 밝히고자 한다. · 연구 배경: 합리주의 신조는 자연 과학의 눈부신 성공 이래 정답을 찾아가려는 노력을 경주해 왔다. 이러한 노력은 오늘날 인간에 관한 이해가 필요한 사회 연구마저도 과학주의적 접근을 통해 결과를 얻으려는 경향으로 나타난다. 특히 정치의 영역은 미리 짜여진 퍼즐 조각들처럼 사전에 예측하기가 어렵기 때문에 본고는 합리주의의 과잉이 문제를 해결하는 데 도움이 되지 않는다는 문제의식에서 출발한다. · 선행연구와의 차이점: 기존의 연구들은 합리주의의 과잉을 우려하거나 영국 보통선거권 확대의 역사적 의의를 조명한 연구들이 주를 이루었다. 그러나 본고는 영국의 경험으로부터 실용주의를 발견하고 건강한 정치 문화 형성을 위한 방향을 제시했다는 점에서 차이가 있다. · 연구방법: 본고는 합리주의의 과잉을 극복하기 위한 방안인 실용주의를 제안한다. 실용적인 방향으로 갈등 해결을 모색하는 일은 조금씩이나마 매듭을 풀어갈 수 있는 현실적인 발걸음이기 때문이다. 필자는 실용적인 접근의 유의미함을 영국 보통선거권의 역사에서 찾고자 한다. 1832년 대개혁법을 시작으로 약 170여년 간 진행된 보통선거권의 쟁취 과정은 정당과 시민의 실용적인 면모를 보여준다. · 연구결과: 영국 보통선거권의 확대 경험으로부터 우리는 점진적인 실천의 중요성을 확인할 수 있다. 정치는 도식화된 이론의 틀이 아닌 타협이나 정치적 합리성과 같은 실용적인 관점으로 바라볼 때 갈등이 해소될 여지가 훨씬 더 커진다. · 공헌점 및 기대효과: 정치 영역에서 점진적인 실천을 통한 실용주의적 관점을 수용하게 되면 장기적으로 건강한 정치 문화 형성에 기여할 수 있다.
Abstract
· Research topics: It is important to be aware of rationalistic thinking in the political realm and to resolve conflicts by accepting pragmatism. · Research background: The rationalist creed has been trying to find the right answer since the brilliant success of natural science. These efforts are seen as a tendency to obtain results through a scientific approach even social studies that require understanding of humans today.Especially, the realm of politics is difficult to predict in advance, like pre-written puzzle pieces, so this paper starts from the consciousness of problem that the excess of rationalism does not help solve the problem. · Differences from prior research: Previous studies have focused on the historical significance of the expansion of universal suffrage, or the concern of excessive rationalism. However, this study differs in that it found pragmatism from the British experience and suggested directions for the formation of a healthy political culture. · Research method: This study proposes pragmatism, a way to overcome the excess of rationalism, because seeking a solution to conflicts in a practical direction is a realistic step to solve the knot. I would like to find the significance of practical approach in the history of British universal suffrage. The process of winning the universal suffrage, which began in 1832 with the Great Reform Bill, for about 170 years, shows the practical aspects of political parties and citizens. · Research results: From our experience of expanding the British universal suffrage, we can confirm the importance of gradual practice. Politics is much more likely to resolve conflicts when viewed from a practical perspective, such as compromise or political rationality, rather than a schematized framework of theory. · Contribution points and expected effects: Accepting a pragmatic perspective through gradual practice in the political realm can contribute to the formation of a healthy political culture in the long term.
