Abstract

This study aims to explore the underlying causes of failure in Problem-Based Learning (PBL) courses by examining university instructors’ lived experiences in actual teaching contexts. Data were collected from ten faculty members at University A who had prior PBL teaching experience, using course operation reports, open-ended surveys, and in-depth interviews. Inductive thematic analysis identified three overarching domains of factors contributing to PBL failure. First, learner-level factors included limited self-directed learning ability and imbalances in collaborative participation. Second, instructional process-level factors involved challenges in problem design, difficulties in determining the appropriate timing and degree of instructional intervention, and constraints in conducting process-oriented assessment. Third, institutional and environmental factors included limited instructional time, inadequate physical learning spaces, and insufficient administrative support. Instructors also reported experiencing emotional and cognitive burdens associated with shifting from the role of information provider to that of facilitator, along with persistent dilemmas in fairly evaluating collaborative learning performance. Nevertheless, instructors actively engaged in adaptive strategies such as participating in professional learning communities, adjusting problem difficulty, expanding digital collaboration platforms, and advocating for institutional improvements. Overall, the study highlights that the success of PBL implementation depends not solely on individual instructional competence but also on the broader systemic and ecological conditions of the learning environment. Future research should incorporate multi-institutional comparative studies, integrated analyses of instructor–learner perspectives, and synthesized findings across successful and unsuccessful PBL implementations.
