Abstract
This study qualitatively explores the experiences of middle-aged students enrolled in a doctoral education program, grounded in Deleuze’s theory of learning. It seeks to uncover the meaning of ‘learning’ through their diverse and complex experiences encountered during the doctoral journey, including those of the researcher. Employing a collaborative autoethnographic approach, the study analyzes data using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis method. The findings are as follows: First, working middle-aged doctoral students often transform a vague desire for professional growth into the concrete decision to pursue further education. Second, they confront the unexpected burdens of balancing work and study, limited academic supervision, and the challenges of scholarly writing—experiences that can lead to self-blame, regret, and frustration. Third, for these students, learning is a process of discovering a personal rhythm that aligns with each student’s approach rather than stopping at blocked paths. Fourth, learning becomes a cartographic process, in which students craft their own maps for spaces where no manual exists. Fifth, learning is integrated into life as a continuous process of engaging with the world and updating the self. This research aims to provide insights that support mid-career doctoral students navigating the challenges of balancing work and study.
