Abstract
· Research Topic: This study views China's current situation as a ‘period’ of pursuing regional hegemony and analyzes the phenomena between China and its neighboring countries based on this definition. Specifically, it examines the U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy's response to phenomena emerging during China's pursuit of regional hegemony and the corresponding Indo-Pacific strategies of South Korea and Japan. · Research Background: Various interpretations exist regarding China's current situation within hegemonic frameworks. While diverse interpretations exist regarding China's current situation, the fact that China is pursuing hegemony is clear. Existing theories, such as the power transition theory and the hegemonic stability theory, have limitations in explaining China's current situation, necessitating a new interpretive framework. Therefore, this paper views China's current situation as a period of pursuing hegemony, i.e., the ‘hegemonic pursuit phase,’ analyzes the characteristics of China during this phase, and focuses on examining the responses and reactions of its neighbors. · Differences from Previous Research: Existing studies have primarily been based on theories about the points at which power transitions occur, or have focused on analyzing the post-achievement phase through theories of the hegemonic stability period. However, this study reexamines China's hegemony from a temporal perspective, defining the current situation as a hegemony pursuit phase. It proposes a new research approach by focusing on the characteristics of China during this phase and the responses of neighboring countries to this phenomenon, utilizing a previously unexplored temporal distinction. · Research Method: This study is based on a clear analysis of China's current situation using various statistical data. It also utilizes diverse materials such as SIPRI and CSIS reports and enhances the clarity of the concept of the “regional hegemony pursuit phase” by analyzing existing prior research. · Research Findings: According to hegemonic stability theory, the emergence of hegemony brings about a stable situation. Furthermore, power transition theory specifies that conflicts arise between states when a balance of power occurs. In contrast, narrowing the focus to the period during which hegemony is pursued reveals an escalation of conflict right up until the moment of hegemonic attainment. Furthermore, the United States, as the power seeking to contain hegemony, pours all its capabilities into preventing it before the point of equilibrium is reached. Meanwhile, regional states like South Korea and Japan exhibit a tendency toward extreme alignment with the United States. · Contributions and Expected Effects: This study offers originality by focusing on a temporal distinction overlooked in previous research. It is expected to contribute not only to the diversity of future hegemony studies but also to research on the logic of power during the pursuit of hegemony, based on this temporal distinction.
