Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the types of difficulties college freshmen experience with campus life and examine whether retention intentions differ across these types. Design/methodology/data/approach: This study analyzed data from 12,734 first-year students across 119 Korean universities, using the 2022 National Assessment of Student Engagement in Learning (NASEL) administered by the Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI). Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was employed. Findings/Results: The study revealed six profiles of college life difficulties, with a key finding that students experiencing interpersonal difficulties showed high withdrawal intentions despite good academic performance. This finding highlights the critical role of social intergration in retention. Value: These findings underscore the need for tailored support strategies that address both the academic and social dimensions of college adjustment during the critical first-year transition.
