During the Four-Seven debate with Ki Tae-sŭng, Yi Hwang quoted a line from ZhuziYulei which says “the four origins are the arousal of li, and the seven emotions are the arousal of qi,” and used it as evidence that ZhuXi’s view is the same as his own. By carefully analyzing the two scholars’ understanding of the meaning of the phrase “arousal of li,” this paper aims to not only question the appropriateness of the above quote but furthermore, to try to suggest a new interpretation for why YiHwang’s “theory of li arousal (lifa)” came to be different from that of ZhuXi.
