Abstract

This study aims to recognize the difference of interpretations on <Suk Heung Ya Mae Jam Hae> by reviewing the debate between Yi Hwang and Noh Susin. Both of those scholars stand for Dohak[道學], the study for development of mind to become a Sage[聖學], while their methods are different. Specifically, Yi Hwang adheres to analytic method on separating human nature from emotion, as well as separating sincerity from mindfulness, while staying faithfully on neo-Confucian theory. On the other hand, Noh Susin emphasises consistency of mind, which does not separate human nature from emotion, and sincerity from mindfulness. This aspect is seen on <In Sim Do Sim Byun[인심도심변]>, and <Suk Heung Ya Mae Jam Hae[숙흥야매잠해]>. Yi Hwang and Noh Susin have had serious discussion on this matter, regarding seperation of pharagraphs, interpretation of sentences and context of writing. Althoughh Noh Susin accepts Yi Hwang's opinion on the interpretation of sentences, he does not accept Yi Hwang's opinion on relationship between Sincerity and Mindfulness. Future generations' perspectives on the opinion of those two scholars vary differently. Scholars of Youngnam School, especilly Yi Hyunil[이현일], is critical on Noh Susin's interpretation, while scholars such as Hur Mok[허목] and Jung Yakyong[정약용], from Kyungki province, are in favor of Noh Susin's opinion. Particularly, Jung Yakyong highly appreciates those two scholars' active debate despite their different academic stances.
