Abstract
This study began with the discovery of Seokha Ryu Geon-ho’s 『Sukhungyamaejamjipseol(夙興夜寐箴集說)』. It was already known that Samiheon Jang Bok-chu had authored a version, but now a manuscript of Seokha’s version has been added to this body of work. Interestingly, the writings of these two scholars exhibit a second instance of “same tune, different melody” (同曲異調) following Sojae and Toegye. This divergence can be summarized in three key aspects. The first is the difference in motivation for writing. Samiheon had a clear intention to pair 『Sukhungyamaejamjipseol』 with 『Gyeongjaejamjipseol Previously, Daesan had compiled 『Gyeongjaejamjipseol』, and in response, Samiheon created 『Sukhungyamaejamjipseol』 as a collection of explanatory notes. Seokha shared a similar purpose but took a critical stance on Samiheon’s work, stating that “explaining the key points does not align with the fundamental concepts” or that Samiheon had “overanalyzed” certain aspects. One aimed to expand the meaning, while the other sought to both continue the discussion and correct preceding errors. The second difference lies in content. Following Sojae’s method, Samiheon segmented each chapter and appended his own “thoughts (按)” at the end of each section. Additionally, at the conclusion of 『Sukhungyamaejamjipseol (夙興夜寐箴集說)』, he included an appendix based on his own interpretations. Particularly in this appendix, he made his intention clear by stating that “Sincerity (誠) is the Way of Heaven (天之道), and Reverence (敬) is the foundation of human affairs (⼈事之本),” thereby incorporating the concept of sincerity into 「Sukhungyamaejam (夙興夜寐箴)」. In contrast, Seokha remained faithful to the concept of 「Sukhungyamaejamdo (夙興夜寐箴圖)」 and focused on concretization. While he also divided the text into 12 sections, this was merely for the sake of refining and specifying the “time divisions (時分),” unlike Samiheon, who engaged in segmentation and additional commentary. The third difference concerns the post-completion circumstances of their works. After finishing his text, Samiheon had opportunities to revise and discuss its contents. His work attracted the interest of scholars and even reached the general public, allowing present-day researchers to study it. On the other hand, Seokha’s work, despite showing traces of revision, seems to have reached the pre-publication stage but was never printed. It remains only in a single manuscript form.
