Abstract

Andrey Tarkovsky’s ‘Nostalghia’ was his first film shot in the West as a joint production with the West. In a relatively free environment from the Soviet censorship, he tried some interesting stylistic devices in this film. Existing studies of ‘Nostalghia’ tended to come mainly concentrated on interpretations of the theme and imagery of the film. This paper will analyzes ‘Nostalghia’, focusing more on the technical aspects specific to the cinematographic art. In Andrey Tarkovsky’s films it is preferred long-take, the cinematographic device in which a prolonged shot constitute the narrative of a scene. In ‘Nostalghia’, long-take still is the dominant device through the structure of the film. But the way he had been doing so far was unable to cope with the dichotomy and tension associated with the narrative of this film. By inserting frame devices in a variety of ways in one shot, he solved the confrontation and tension of the thematic dimension in a visual manner. Vertical images appearing in this movie, such as pillars and poles, create the effect of splitting the scene without making separate shots. Each frame divided in the tracking shot functions like a single shot. In particular, the structure with arched upper part drives the visual movement of this film by appearing as a repetitive frame for the protagonists.
