Abstract

Chu Hsi's theory of Sim-tong-sung-jung(心統性情) has dual aspects. On the one hand, he explains this thesis that mind comprehends nature and sentiment. On the other hand, he explains this thesis that mind should supervise nature and sentiment. The former is realistic explanation, and the latter is normative explanation. While the former is linked to the theory of changing the temperament, the latter is linked to the theory of preserving conscience and reflecting desire. Like this, realistic explanation and normative explanation differ from each other, so we must distinguish between them. Such dual aspects are also found in Korean Neo-Confucianism. Toegye understands Sim-tong-sung-jung focused on normative explanation, and emphasized “dominating the mind with piety.” It means distinguishing (and choosing) properly between natural order and human desire when the mind is aroused. But Yulgok understands Sim-tong-sung-jung focused on realistic explanation, and emphasized “changing the temper with faithfulness.” In short, the two major currents in Korean Neo-Confucianism were closely related to the dual aspects of Chu Hsi's theory.
