Abstract
Dongcheon, widely known as an ideal utopia, was a popular cultural phenomenon throughout the Joseon Dynasty. Reflecting this trend, numerous dongcheon sites were also established in Bonghwa region, a mountainous inland region of North Gyeongsang Province. Currently, 25 dongcheon sites have been identified in Bonghwa, with the locations of 22 sites confirmed. Based on the locations of engraved inscriptions, the dongcheon sites were classified into five types: valley-type, house-type, river-type, village-type, and burial-ground-type. This study presents the chronological development of these types. Valley-type and house-type dongcheon emerged first during the 16th and 17th centuries, followed by a proliferation of river-type dongcheon in the 18th century, marking their peak in popularity. By the 19th century, the concept of dongcheon gradually shifted from a Neo-Confucian utopia to a site favored for its geomantic auspiciousness. In the 20th century, village-type and burial-ground-type dongcheon were created with a focus on geomantic symbolism, and these forms have continued into the present day. Until now, scholarly approaches to dongcheon have largely focused on their scenic or ideological aspects. However, few dongcheon sites have been designated as “Scenic Sites” by the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea. This is primarily because dongcheon were often established based on personal aesthetic or philosophical criteria, rather than on widely shared recognition of their scenic value. In addition, many dongcheon were created by relatively unknown individuals, further limiting their public recognition. Given this context, evaluating dongcheon solely through the lens of nationally designated scenic sites may be inadequate. From the perspective of local history, however, dongcheon serve as valuable cultural records that reveal how local residents perceived and engaged with their environment. The fact that these sites were developed amid political and social turbulence, motivated by local pride and affection for one’s homeland, allows for a partial reconstruction of regional historical narratives. Thus, although dongcheon may not align neatly with the criteria for national scenic heritage, they can be regarded as important cultural assets for understanding local history.
