Abstract

This article seeks to move beyond the conventional framing of seowon as either traditional educational institutions or heritage-based tourist resources. Instead, it reconceptualizes seowon as twenty-first-century humanities platforms through which contemporary social and educational challenges can be critically examined and addressed. To this end, the study revisits three core functions of seowon—ganghak (講學), jeyang (祭享), and ganghoe (講會)—all of which have been reduced or substantially reconfigured in the modern period. Building on a combined framework of recontextualization and interactivity, the article proposes a model for their contemporary rearticulation. Here, recontextualization does not denote the simple restoration or repetition of tradition; rather, it refers to the deliberate repositioning of the relational arrangements and meaning-making processes through which these practices historically operated, now recalibrated within present social conditions. First, ganghak is understood not as a narrow, text-explanatory mode of instruction, but as an integrated practice of cultivation that internalizes Neo- Confucian principles of life, trains communal ethics, and extends learning into social practice. Contemporary seowon education, however, has largely been confined to short-term lectures or experiential programs, limiting the ritual and communal dimensions that traditionally structured ganghak. In response, this article proposes a stage-based learning platform—comprising introductory, advanced, and project-based phases—together with a digital academy designed to sustain an interactive learning ecosystem that connects classical texts to present-day questions. This approach aims to transform ganghak from one-way knowledge transmission into a durable structure of participatory learning co-produced by learners and local communities. Second, jeyang is examined as more than a commemorative rite honoring past sages. It is reconceptualized as a mediating apparatus of cultural memory in which learning, remembrance, and communal practice intersect. Following World Heritage inscription, jeyang has increasingly faced a destabilizing tension between sacralization and touristic performance, a shift that risks attenuating its reflective and ethical force. Focusing on the jeonhak-humyo (前學後廟) configuration of Byeongsan Seowon, the article proposes a model of “learning ritual” that integrates (1) lectures on ritual culture and guided textual reading before and after the rite, (2) limited and structured participation in preparatory processes, and (3) post-ritual forums devoted to local concerns. This model reframes jeyang not as a reenactment of the past, but as a practice that transforms memory into learning and ritual into critical reflection. Finally, by linking the tradition of ganghoe to Jürgen Habermas’s concept of the public sphere, the article explores the potential of seowon as platforms for civic deliberation and local public discourse, drawing on the deliberation- education program at Museong Seowon. Synthesizing these discussions, the study argues that the contemporary transformation of seowon can be conceptualized through the interaction of four axes: academic deepening, participatory education, global expansion, and regional engagement. It further emphasizes the need to move beyond visitor-centered quantitative metrics by adopting evaluation indicators attentive to learning continuity, the quality of outputs, and community feedback effects, alongside governance restructuring that brings together clan associations, local governments, academia (universities), and local residents. Revitalizing seowon as living heritage, the article concludes, entails not merely preserving tradition but designing forms of public responsibility responsive to present life and future generations.
