Abstract

The weight of unproductive sector has increased both on value added and on labor employment in the path of modern capitalist development. This paper examines from the point of view of marxian political economics the implications that this phenomenon has in capital accumulation and capitalist development. For this purpose, using the scheme of extended reproduction, this paper examines the problems which the increase of technical composition of capital as a general tendency of capitalist development causes in the process of extended reproduction. From these examination, this paper comes to get the results as follow. First, the increase of technical composition ultimately leads to the decrease of labor employment and the decline of accumulation rate in productive industries, so that the extended reproduction and the capital accumulation in productive industries are interrupted unless the consumption of capitalist class increases unlimitedly. Second, creating the unproductive sector in economy makes the sustaining circulation of hoarding surplus value possible through roundabout consumption, so that the extended reproduction and the capital accumulation under technical progress are accomplished with no disturbance. Finally, in modern capitalist economy, the existence of unproductive sector is the precondition for the stability of extended reproduction and is itself the result of increasing productivity according to technical progress. Therefore unproductive industries are certainly unproductive, but useful for accumulation of socially total capital.
