Abstract
There have been many discussions about the impact of effective demand and income distribution on capital accumulation and economic growth between Marxists and Kaleckians. Marxists argue that the rate of capacity utilization is a given normal rate or must be equal to a normal rate in the long run, and therefore effective demand does not influence accumulation and income distribution for wages affects accumulation negatively. On the contrary, Kaleckians contend that the rate of capacity utilization is not a given normal rate in the short run and long runs, and thus effective demand and wage income distribution have favorable effects on capital accumulation. While many empirical studies have been conducted on these arguments, they do not all reach the same results. However, if we only consider the domestic economy, a Kaleckian conclusion seems to be more plausible for many countries. Nevertheless, the degree of the rate of capacity utilization is dependent on the phase of business cycle and thus the validity of both arguments depend on the contemporary economic situation.
