Abstract
This paper critically examines the theory, suggested by environmental economists, that use-value of nature is transformable into its exchange-value. Based on Marx’s labor theory of value, the paper first describes how the contradiction between use-value and value influence environmental problems. This contradiction means that environmental deterioration implies progressive crisis of capital accumulation and deterioration of life condition as well. The second point of the paper is to explore intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing firm’s environment management. The environment management can be chosen for saving constant capital that has increased through capital accumulation process, or can be constrained by external compelling forces such as social movement and social regulation. In case that the external force acts as a function to suppress firm’s profit seeking, the environment management can not be compatible with environmental protection. This paper finally concludes that the environmental management has limitation in itself, and an alternative approach is to construct the environmental solution struggling against capitalism.
