마르크스가 제기한 노동계급의 자기해방 원리는 자연발생적인 노동자 운동과 사회주의 혁명 운동의 결합을 전제로 하고 있다. 국제노동자협회 역시 선진적인 사회주의자들과 노동자 대중조직의 국제적 결합이었다. 국제노동자협회는 공산주의자동맹과 독일 사회민주주의노동자당을 연결해주는 시간적 고리일 뿐만 아니라 노동계급 자기해방 원리의 개념적 고리이다. 국제노동자협회는 노동계급 자기해방 원리가 형성되고 발전하는 과정이었으며, 특히 노동해방의 주체로서 노동조합과 노동자당이 정립해나가는 과정이었다. 마르크스는 1871년 파리코뮌의 분석을 통해 부르주아 국가를 파괴하고 노동자 정부를 수립하지 못한다면 결국 혁명이 붕괴될 수밖에없다는 점을 규명하고, 국제노동자협회 내의 프루동주의자, 바쿠닌주의자, 블랑키주의자 등 무정부주의자들을 비판했다. 국제노동자협회는 민주주의적 대중 활동을강조했으며, 블랑키주의자와 바쿠닌주의자와 같은 소수의 음모적 봉기노선을 경계했다. 마르크스는 국제노동자협회를 중앙집권적인 노동자 정치조직으로 건설하는과정에서 중앙집권화에 반대하는 바쿠닌과 결별했다. 결론적으로 공산주의자동맹의 해소가 훗날 국제노동자협회의 밑거름이 되었듯이국제노동자협회의 해소는 일국적 차원과 국제적 차원에서 노동자당과 노동조합이정립되는 과정이었다.
Abstract
The principle of self-emancipation of the proletariat assumed thecombination of the spontaneous workers’ movement and the revolutionarysocialist movement. The International Workingmen’s Association combinedworkers and politically advanced socialists. During the same period, the tradeunion and the workers’ party were also established as subjects of self-emancipation. In the International Workingmen’s Association, Marx criticized theanarchists who denied the necessity of a workers’ party and provisionalworkers’ government. He was alert to the danger of a conspiracy carried out bya handful of agitators and emphasized democratic political action instead. However, he failed to transform the Association into a centralized workers’organization. As the dissolution of the Communist League became the foundation of theInternational Working Men’s Association, the latter’s dissolution helpedestablished trade unions and workers’ parties nationally and internationally.
