제1인터내셔널, 즉 국제노동자협회(IWA)는 최초의 국제 노동자 연대 조직으로서당대 노동자 운동과 정치 운동에 상당한 영향을 미쳤을 뿐만 아니라 역사적으로도중요한 전통과 유산을 남겼다. 창립 150년을 맞이하는 오늘날 이런 인터내셔널의역사는 새롭게 조명될 필요가 있다. 왜냐하면 생태적 위기와 신자유주의의 위기가심화되는 현재 인터내셔널의 국제주의 전통을 다시 살려내고, 또한 그것이 남긴 마르크스주의의 부정적 유산을 검토하는 일이 필요하기 때문이다. 인터내셔널은 프랑스대혁명으로 출발한 국제주의 전통의 저류하에 1840년대 노동자 운동과 사회주의운동의 선구자들이 상호 접촉하면서 운동의 방향과 원칙에 대해 토론하는 과정에서등장했다. 또한 협소한 이해관계가 아니라 보편적인 혹은 공통의 이해관계를 추구할 때 국제주의는 제대로 작동할 수 있었다. 하지만 프루동주의 및 바쿠닌주의와의논쟁에서 드러난 것처럼 정통 마르크스주의가 자리 잡아가는 과정은 그 난점을 드러내는 일이기도 했으며, 이를 극복하는 일은 여전히 과제로 남아 있다.
Abstract
As the first organization of cross-border working class solidarity, theInternational Workingmen’s Association (First International) has a stronginfluence on contemporary labor and political movements. However, asecological and neoliberal crises have deepened, it is necessary to renew itstradition of internationalism and probe the negative legacy of Marxism. TheFirst International was developed through interaction between labor andsocialist movements of the 1840s and 1850s. It sought universal interests ratherthan the narrower interests of the national working classes. Although orthodoxMarxism was established through these theoretical and political disputes, itsaporiae would be revealed through those conflicts. Socialist states in 20thcentury based on the centralized economy and authoritarian regime turned ourattention to Proudhonist insistence on the cooperative and Bakuninist warningagainst authoritarianism. Our task is to cope with them.
