엥겔스는 이른바 ‘과학적 사회주의’의 관점에서 ‘유토피아 사회주의’를 일방적으로 기각하지 않았다. 엥겔스는 유토피아주의자로 불릴 정도로 오웬, 푸리에와 같은유토피아 사회주의자들의 논의를 적극 수용하여 포스트자본주의론을 발전시켰다. 마르크스의 포스트자본주의론에서와 마찬가지로 엥겔스의 포스트자본주의론에서도 어소시에이션 개념은 핵심적이며, 이는 엥겔스의 평생의 텍스트들에서 확인된다. 이는 엥겔스의 포스트자본주의론이 ‘노동자계급의 자기해방’을 추구하는 ‘아래로부터 사회주의’ 흐름에 서 있음을 보여준다. 엥겔스는 포스트자본주의론을 노동시간 계산 계획 모델로 정식화했다는 점에서, 또 포스트자본주의론 자체를 하나의독립된 이론으로 체계화했다는 점에서, 마르크스보다 앞섰다. 엥겔스는 포스트자본주의론를 하나의 폐쇄된 체계가 아니라 미완의 개방된 체계로서 사고하면서, 이를페미니즘과 생태사회주의 영역으로 확장하려고 시도했다. 하지만 어소시에이션의필수적 요소인 자유와 개인적 소유에 대한 엥겔스의 이해는 마르크스와 중요한 차이를 보인다. 이런 차이가 엥겔스를 마르크스로부터 분리하여 마르크스와 대립하는소비에트 마르크스주의의의 원조로 간주하는 근거가 될 수 있는지는 더 검토되어야한다.
Abstract
Engels did not reject ‘Utopian Socialism’ in the name of ‘Scientific Socialism’. Engels took the core idea of ‘Utopian socialism’ and developed it into a theory of postcapitalism, i.e., socialism or communism. Engels was more enthusiastic about ‘Utopian Socialism’ than Marx. Engels also identified himself with the principle of ‘self-emancipation of working-class’ earlier than Marx. Engels theorized the political economy of socialism, including labor-time calculation planning, as a separate discipline, distinct from the political economy of capitalism. In his later years, Engels extended the arena of postcapitalism beyond value, class, and state, toward gender and ecology. For Engels, postcapitalism was open-ended. Contrary to conservative or anarchist accusations, Engels belongs to the tradition of ‘socialism from below’ (‘democratic socialism’) with Marx. Like Marx, Engels envisioned postcapitalism as the free and full development of ‘association’ [Assoziation]. This paper demonstrates the last point by examining all the texts of Engels where the word ‘association’ appears. This paper also discusses some important differences in conceptualizing ‘association’ between Marx and Engels, focusing on planning, freedom and the re-establishment of individual property.
