Abstract
This article aims first of all to examine the recomposition of capitalist work in Korea. Based on Marx’s understanding of capital as a form of social relations of extraction of abstract labour, this article will show the continual reorganisation of capitalist labour in Korea by tracing interactions between the movement of capital and the movement of labour. Particular focus will be on the recent movement of capital that precipitated the massive irregularisation of capitalist work. The irregu- larisation of labour in Korea shows that labour has been subsumed to the logic of the reproduction of the social conditions of capital accumulation after the Asian eco- nomic crisis. In that sense, irregularisation might be able to serve the revitalisation of capitalist development, but only at the expense of the mass of working population. However, I will not examine this process as a one-way process of labour being re- composed by the movement of capital. Rather, I will illustrate this process by closely looking at the way in which labour moves beyond the social arrangement of ex- ploitation by founding itself on the newly emerging labour activism in Korea. As far as capital is bound to the extraction of abstract labour for its accumulation, this domination of capital over the society does not necessarily mean a completion of the abstraction of social relations. Rather, a closer look at the newly emerging labour activism shows that labour also moves beyond the social conditions of accumulation imposed by the movement of capital, even before they are consolidated, by question- ing the existing institutional forms of the movement of labour.
