최근의 노동 연구에서 자본주의적 노동의 다양한 사회적 형태와 투쟁의 발전을 파악할 수 있는 비판적 방법론의 개발은 별다른 진전을 보지 못하고 있다. 이 글은 이러한 방법론적 문제의 근원에 놓인 노동 연구의 체계가 생산공간의 조합운동으로 축소되어온 노동운동의 굴절된 발전과의 조응 속에서 형성되는 과정을 이론적으로 그리고 역사적으로 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 우리가 하는 많은 부분의 노동 연구는 마르크스가 밝혀냈던 사회관계를 특수하게 매개하는 자본주의적 노동의 ‘가치론적 규정’보다는 직접적인 착취과정을 묘사하는 ‘노동의 잉여가치론적 규정’에 기반하고 있다. 이는 노동 연구를 보다 복잡하고 풍부한 지식 체계로 새우는 것에 공헌하여 온 것이 사실이지만 다른 한편 노동 연구를 오로지 생산 공간의 기술적 측면들을 연구하는 학문체계로 정립하면서 노동 연구의 총체적이고 비판적인 성격을 상실시켜왔다. 이 글은 노동 연구가 마르크스의 노동의 가치규정이 함의하고 있는 노동의 자본주의 사회관계 재생산에서의 핵심적 역할을 승인하고 노동력의 운동 뿐 만이 아닌 ‘가치’ 안에서 그리고 가치에 대항하여 벌어지는 노동의 운동과 투쟁들을 노동 연구의 주제들로 재전취할 때 자본주의 사회에 대한 변혁적인 역할과 노동운동에 대한 비판적 기능을 되찾을 수 있다고 주장한다.
Abstract
In contemporary labour studies, methodological innovations to grasp the changing social forms and struggles of capitalist labour seem to be stagnating. This article aims to address the system of labour studies behind these methodological problems. To do so, I explore the historical and theoretical development of labour studies corresponding to the distorted development of the labour movement that is often reduced to a movement of employees at production sites. Marx’s value-definition of capitalist labour as an understanding of the most important and peculiar mediation of capitalist social relations has been forgotten in labour studies and instead the narrow surplus value-based understanding of labour became the exclusive, if not only, basis of contemporary labour studies. Although this contributed to the establishment of labour studies as a sophisticated system of knowledge labour studies in the meantime became an ‘area study’ which deals only with production sites on the basis of categories created by the capitalist fetishisation of real world and abandoned its role as a comprehensive critique of capitalist social relations. It is argued that labour studies can critically reinvent itself by recognising the central role of labour incarnated in Marx’s value-definition of capitalist labour and reclaiming the struggles in and against value as subjects of labour studies.
