Abstract
In this paper, I would like to deploy a different concept of “the power of production” that is in contrast with the utilitarian concept of productivity. In Marx’s view, productive power is not the ratio between input and output, but the “relationship between human and nature.” Thus, “Communist” society is not the one that has more productivity than capitalist society, but one that relationship between human and nature is different from that of capitalist society. Utilitarian concept of productivity becomes a hindrance to thinking the relationship between human and nature in ecological terms as well. In short, relationship between human and nature is not limited to the question of ecology, but a central question of historical materialism. Hence, the concept of production must be generalized, so that ecology and historical materialism can be thought on equal terms and upon that the general theory of production can be constructed. It is also a burning question in an age that life activity itself has emerged as the central object of exploitation of surplus value due to the cloning technology. Marx’s argument provides an important point of departure, which established production of life(Leben) as the central question of historical materialism. Based on this, I redefined production as “the activity that transforms nature into a possessive form for survival and reproduction”. Production here always works in “community” unit. Power of production is defined as an internal intensity of the transformability on the one side, and extensive range of the transformability on the other side. I tried to explain by the concept of “profit of circulation”, the mode by which surplus of production occurs and circulates, and this is extracted as surplus production and possessed as surplus value. Through these concepts, I tried to rethink the common notion of relation of production and the development of productive power and redefine the thesis that revolution in relation of production is required to develop the power of production.
