Abstract

In this paper, I define materialist politics as ‘activation of the outside.’ Thisdefinition would entail three aspects. First, it involves the conceptualization ofthe masses as a ‘flow of material,’ which forms ‘the primary process’ of thepolitics. The masses are here differentiated from the crowd in that they arecharacterized not by mere numerical largeness but by the line of flight. Themasses are outside of all given orders. Politics is the invention of the masses byactivating the vector of breakaway. Second, materialist politics is defined by theactivation of the outside in the relationship between inside and outside. Whilethe politics of ‘invasion’ moves from outside to inside, the politics of‘exuviation’ goes from inside to outside. Politics in the former sense is to makethe invisible visible, but without the component of exuviation, politics ofinvasion ends up subsumed by the state and/or capital. Last, materialist politicsencompasses commune-ism, which conceives of the commune as outside ofcapitalism. This is to invent the outside of capitalism in opposition to thesubsumption and exploitation by the state and/or capital.
