Abstract
After more than two years of international feminist mobilizations it is clearly time to say that we are in the middle of a new feminist wave. This is a wave that, while varied across different countries, has placed issues such as gender violence, wage inequality, reproductive rights, and women’s reproductive work, as well as sexual liberties, at the center of the political and cultural debate of every country hit by the mobilizations. To fully grasp the impact of this event, we need to clarify the terms. This is not the fourth or even the fifth feminist wave. It is the third and arrives around 40 years after the end of the second. In the past few decades there has been a certain tendency to label as “feminist wave” new currents of feminist thought that took place largely in the Anglo-American academic world. While these currents have marked important turning points within feminist theory, they were not rooted in processes of mass social and political mobilization comparable to the feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s. In this article, rather than turns within a theoretical debate the word, “wave” is applied to indicate a process of social and political subjectivation that takes place through mass insurgency. Moreover, by using the term to move beyond the periodization of Anglo-American feminist debates we avoid universalizing a geographical particularity, and instead “re-provincialize” the Anglo-American world within the far broader experience of global feminist movements.
