Abstract
The increasing theoretical attention to the dynamic relationship between neoliberalism and feminism has given rise to concepts such as “free-market feminism,” “transnational business feminism,” and “neoliberal feminism.” These discussions presuppose a particular understanding of neoliberalism as an analytical framework for contemporary capitalist societies. However, given the highly contested nature of neoliberalism itself, a critical review of its conceptual foundation is necessary. While feminist critiques of neoliberalism have been actively developed across multiple dimensions, there remains a lack of scholarship exploring the trajectories of these debates. This paper examines the key issues in feminist critiques of neoliberalism, which have evolved alongside the development of neoliberalism, categorizing them into four themes: (1) neoliberalism as a gender-biased development policy, (2) neoliberalism as a neoconservative reactionary backlash, (3) neoliberalism as a global order restructuring gender hierarchies, and (4) neoliberalism as a mode of governmentality shaping gendered subjects. Furthermore, this paper highlights how these critical debates have paralleled reflective discussions on the neoliberalization of feminism. In this context, “neoliberal feminism” is positioned as both the latest manifestation and a theoretical symptom of this process. The paper concludes by exploring the broader the implications of this articulation for feminist discourse.
