이 책은 오늘날 인류가 겪고 있는 심각한 문제 중 하나, 아니 어쩌면 모든 문제의핵심을 정치의 위기에서 찾고 있으며, 정치를 회복하기 위해서는 근본적인 수준에서 민주주의를 재구성해야 한다고 주장하고 있다. 이러한 주장을 위해 저자는 이 책의 부제가 ‘정치 공동체와 주체적 역량에 관한 철학적 시론들’인 것처럼, 칸트와 마르크스에서 시작해서, 아도르노, 아렌트, 발리바르, 버틀러를 거쳐 라클라우와 무페에 이르기까지 정치 공동체와 그 구성원을 둘러싼 복잡하고도 논쟁적인 철학적 사유를 전개한다. 저자가 바라보는 정치의 위기는 민주주의를 구성하는 제도 일부가제대로 작동하지 않는다거나, 새로운 현상에 대응하는 원리가 부족해서 발생하는것이 아니다. 그 위기는 민주주의 그 자체가 부정되는 ‘탈민주화’에 있으며, 그 핵심은 민주주의의 주체가 사라지고 있다는 것이다. 주체의 사라짐이란 곧 민주주의가분명 데모스(demos), 즉 인민(people)에게서 그 권력이 나오는 정치체라는 사실이망각되고 정치적 주체로서의 인민의 자격이 점점 부정되고 있다는 것을 의미한다. 결국 저자에게 오늘날 민주주의 정치의 본질적인 문제는 바로 ‘주체성의 위기’인 것이다. 이 글은 이러한 주장이 담긴 이 책에 대한 비판적 서평이다.
Abstract
This book identifies one of the most serious problems facing humanity today — or perhaps the core of all problems — as the crisis of politics. It argues that in order to restore politics, democracy must be fundamentally reconstructed. To support this claim, the author delves into the complex and contentious philosophical thinking surrounding political communities and their members, starting from Kant and Marx, and moving through Adorno, Arendt, Balibar, Butler, Laclau, and Mouffe, as indicated by the book’s subtitle, ‘Philosophical Essays on Political Communities and Subjective Capabilities.’ According to the author, the crisis of politics is not caused by the malfunctioning of certain democratic institutions or the lack of principles to address new phenomena. The crisis lies in the ‘de-democratization,’ where democracy itself is being denied. The essence of this crisis is the disappearance of the democratic subject. The disappearance of the subject means that although democracy is clearly a political system where power originates from demos, the people, this fact is being forgotten, and the people’s status as political subjects is increasingly being denied. Ultimately, the author views the fundamental problem of today's democratic politics as a ‘crisis of subjectivity.’ This article is a critical review of the book containing these claims.
