Abstract

This study examines the traditional architecture of Dangae Village, located in Sindeung-myeon, Sancheong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, and explores the spatial meanings of these historic buildings through hanmun (classical Chinese) literary works that record their origins and significance. Although the detailed process by which Dangae Village formed a lineage-based community remains unclear, it has been home to prominent clans since the late Joseon period, including the Andong Gwon clan (Donggye Gwondo lineage), the Suncheon Park clan (Yongdam Park Ijang lineage), the Sangsan Kim clan (Dangae Kim Inseop lineage), and the Miryang Park clan (Haksan Park Sangtae lineage). An analysis of hanmun writings related to their existing architectural heritage reveals the following spatial interpretations: The Hwan’gye Seowon represents the loyal concern (jin-woo toe-woo, “worry in advancement and retreat”) of Gwon Do; the Sogye Seodang embodies Gwon Sukbong’s aspiration to succeed the family’s scholarly tradition with a humble and self-disciplined attitude (man-son gyeom-ik, “avoid arrogance and embrace modesty”). The Yongdam Jeongsa reflects Park Ijang’s gentlemanly restraint (nan-jin i-toe, “difficult to advance, easy to retreat”). The Taeheoru symbolizes Kim Inseop’s pursuit of the ultimate principle, Taeheo (Great Void), and his introspective self-discipline (ja-su cham-sim, “guarding oneself and cultivating the mind”), while the Dugok Seodang serves as a commemorative space for his ancestral rites. The Dogae Jeongsa commemorates Park Sangtae’s scholarly devotion, expressed through the ideals of jeonbal (“transmission of enlightenment”) and dokshin (“solitary faith”). In conclusion, the traditional architecture of Dangae Village embodies the intellectual orientations and moral ideals of its lineage figures, representing the symbolic realization of their scholarly spirit and the transmission of Confucian learning within the spatial domain.
