Abstract

In her later writings published after Borderlands/La Frontera(1987), Gloria Anzaldúa proposes alternative theory of nepantlra subjectivity that underscores feminist spirituality and its transformative potential for social change. By creatively theorizing nepantlera and conocimiento, Anzaldúa further develops her own theory of intellectual activism beyond her conceptualization of mestiza consciousness in Borderlands. The post-Borderlands subjects called nepantleras inhabit liminal spaces while offering a connectivist vision that we are all in this together. As “supreme border crossers,” nepantleras position themselves as universal so that they mediate deep awakenings and transformative perceptions while moving between worlds. Figuring nepantleras as agents of conocimiento, Anzaldúa brings to the fore the importance of spiritual knowledge that has power to change realities. This article focuses on Anzalúa’s later writings and discusses in detail her theories of nepantlera subjectivity and activism. Illuminating Anzaldúa’s shifting trajectory of feminist theorizing, this article argues that her theory of conocimiento is core to her feminist thought. Reading Anzaldúa’s later writings as an integral part of her intellectual activism, this article also argues that Coyolxauqui process is another central concept in her shifting from mestiza consciousness to nepantlera spirituality and conocimiento epistemology.
