Abstract

In this article I read Gloria Anzaldúa's two essays in This Bridge Called My Back(1981) and her 1987 book, Borderlands/La Frontera, as pioneering writings in theorizing intersectionality and queer politics. As one of the first openly lesbian Chicana feminists, Anzaldúa played a formative role in defining Chicana and queer identities. Focusing on the ways in which Anzaldúa elaborates her queer positionings in This Bridge and Borderlands, I argue that she also makes a pioneering contribution to feminist understandings of intersections among gender, class, race, sexuality, nation, etc. “La Prieta” and “Speaking in Tongues” in This Bridge documents Anzaldúa's epistemological break from dominant modes of knowledge production by redefining sexuality as a powerful path to theorize embodied knowledge. This queer moment in producing knowledge is developed into “mestiza consciousness” in Borderlands, which serves as an epistemological space for feminists of color to develop corporeal theories of self-transformation and social change. Discussing Borderlands as a textual space for feminist epistemology beyond dualistic modes of thinking, I argue that Anzaldúa successfully provides new theories and methodologies while using race, class, gender, and sexuality as categories of analysis and rewriting Chicano history.
