Abstract

The typological classification of motion events in Modern Mandarin Chinese has remained a topic of enduring debate. According to Talmy’s (2000 [2019]) seminal framework, languages are conventionally divided into verb-framed (V-framed) and satellite-framed (S-framed) types. However, Mandarin Chinese has not been conclusively assigned to either category. This study investigates Mandarin’s syntactic framing tendencies by applying the Omission Method to displacement event constructions, focusing on the core status and syntactic roles of V₁ (manner-of-motion verbs) and V₂ (path verbs). The findings show that when V₁ is realized as a transitive unergative verb, it cannot be omitted without disrupting the event structure. In such cases, V₂ primarily encodes motion results, aligning with satellite-framed patterns. Conversely, transitive unaccusative verbs display structural dependence, enabling Mandarin to shift flexibly between V-framed and S-framed configurations. Notably, in certain constructions, Mandarin also exhibits features of equipollently-framed (E-framed) languages, in which V₁ and V₂ engage in syntactic competition and demonstrate considerable adaptability. This challenges the conventional classification of Mandarin as a merely “mixed-framing language” and instead advocates for a more nuanced typological framework. The study empirically demonstrates how verb types and argument structures influence the framing properties of Mandarin Chinese.
