Abstract
What is the relationship between data and models in the Petabyte Age? Thanks to the revolution of information technology the type and amount of data available to researchers have been dramatically increased over the last decade. The analysis of these “Big Data” often takes a form of descriptive statistics or visualizations without careful consideration of the importance of research design and sophisticated statistical modeling, which may produce a misleading perception that the sheer size of “Big Data” nullifies traditional concerns over flaws in research design or selection bias. In this paper, I argue that there is no principled reason to consider the relationship among research design, model, and data to change in the Petabyte Age by focusing on recent studies of the 2012 presidential election in South Korea.
