Abstract
Friendship is the most significant social relation throughout a lifetime. Individuals expand to various relationships most during adolescence, regarding peer influence more important than that of parents. Therefore, we counselors have to be ready for intervention and prevention for youth clients at the counseling center. This study was intended to find out the characteristics of the adolescent clients who visited the counseling center with the friendship problems. The subjects were 8 teenagers(3 boys and 5 girls) who have received or are going through individual counseling. The interview questionnaire included 5 categories : the content of the problem, ways of coping with the problem and the results, self-concept, idea of friendship, and evaluation of the counseling process. Through using CQR(consensual qualitative research), researchers analyzed the interview contents of the clients and results are as follows : First, adolescent clients’ image of the ideal friend is an intimate friend providing emotional support and help. Second, on conflicts, adolescent clients attribute the problems to their own personality. Third, adolescent clients have various coping strategies such as actively crying for help to close people and passive endurance. Fourth, adolescent clients value the help of friends more than that of teachers or family members. Fifth, adolescent clients find it difficult to open themselves up to new friends. Sixth, adolescent clients think that they have to use verbal communication for resolving problems, but find it difficult to do so actually. Lastly, adolescent clients appreciate individual counseling and find it helpful for resolving friendship problems.
