초록

본 연구는 한국의 사회문화적 맥락에서 이혼가족 자녀들의 경험의 실체를 파악하고, 자녀들의 관점에서 부모 이혼 후 적응과정을 이해하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이와 같은 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 본 연구에서는 부모 이혼을 경험한 19～30세 미만의 성인초기 이혼자녀 14명을 대상으로 심층면접을 통한 질적연구를 수행하였다. 자료분석은 질적연구 방법 중 근거이론 접근방법에 따라 이루어졌다. 자료 분석을 바탕으로 주요 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이혼가족 자녀들이 경험하는 중심현상은 ‘억눌림’인 것으로 밝혀졌다. 억눌림의 배경은 이혼에 대한 부정적인 인식, 암묵적 의사소통, 밀착된 가족관계와 같은 한국의 사회문화적 특성 및 가족문화의 특성과 밀접한 관계가 있었다. 둘째, 이혼가족 자녀의 적응과정에서의 핵심주제는 ‘부모의 이혼을 수용하고 자아를 재정립’해 나가는 과정인 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 부모 이혼 후 자녀는 억압단계, 갈등단계, 자각단계, 수용단계를 거치며 적응해가는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과를 바탕으로 이혼가족 자녀들의 적응을 도모하기 위하여 이혼가족과 이혼자녀에 대한 부정적 인식 전환의 필요성과 이혼부모가 자녀의 적응을 조력할 수 있는 부모교육 프로그램의 의무화에 대한 정책적 방안을 제시하였다. 또한 부모 이혼 후 자녀의 심리적 안녕과 적응과정을 촉진시킬 수 있는 상담적 개입방안을 제안하였다. 본 연구는 이혼가족 자녀와의 심층면접을 통해 제3자의 관점이 아닌 ‘자녀의 목소리’로 그들의 경험의 실체를 파악하고, 이혼 후 적응과정을 심도있게 탐색했다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve the understanding of experiences of children of divorce in Korean social-cultural contexts and explore their post-divorce adjustment process from the children's perspectives. The grounded theory was adopted in this study to address the research questions. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with fourteen young adult aged from 19-30 years olds who experienced their parent's divorce. The major findings of this study are summarized as follows: First, 'being suppressed' was the central phenomenon that the participants experienced following a parental divorce, which resulted in the development of a emotionally suppressed and shrunken self. Second, the core issue in the process of an adjustment of children from a divorced family was 'accepting the parental divorce and re-defining the self'. Third, participants went thorough four stages in time during their adjustment process; the stage of repression, the stage of conflict, the stage of awareness, and the stage of acceptance. The results of this study suggest that negative perceptions on a divorce in a Korean society need to be changed. A mandatory parent's education program for divorced adults is proposed to assist their parenting, especially in helping their children's adjustment. Also, counseling interventions are suggested to improve children's psychological well-being and facilitate their adjustment.
