학업중퇴 청소년의 적응유연성

본 연구에서는 학업중퇴라는 고위험 상황에서도 성공적인 적응과정을 경험하고 있는 적응유연적인 청소년의 특성을 도출하고자 했다. 이를 위하여 3단계의 연구과정을 수행했다. 1단계에서는 학업중퇴의 다양한 유형을 분석함으로써 적응유연적인 특성을 지닌 학업중퇴 청소년 집단을 확인하고자 했고, 2단계에서는 추가 분석을 통해 적응유연적인 중퇴생들의 심리사회적 특성을 도출하였다. 마지막 3단계에서는 전형적인 적응유연적인 특성을 보이는 학업중퇴생을 대상으로 하여 생애사적인 관점에서 분석하였다. 1단계에서는 학업중퇴 경험이 있는 만 16세-23세의 청소년 30사례를 대상으로 심층 면접했고, Strauss 와 Corbin의 현실기반이론 접근을 통하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과 ‘새로운 대안추구형’에서부터 ‘고독한 개척자형’ 지속적인 시행착오과정에 있는 ‘시행착오형’, 무조건 나오고 보자해서 나온 ‘탈출형’, 비행 문제도 심각한데다가 개인적, 환경적 자원도 가장 열악하여 중퇴를 계기로 더 힘든 나락으로 떨어지게 되는 ‘자포자기형’으로 구분되었다. 2단계에서는 30사례 중에서 적응유연적인 특성이 가장 많이 보이는 ‘새로운 대안추구형’과 ‘고독한 개척자형’에 분류된 7 사례를 집중 분석한 결과, 비교적 높은 학업성적, 자신의 미래에 대한 책임감, 낙관적인 성격, 주요한 타인으로부터의 정보제공과 정서적 지원, 현실적인 진로 계획과 준비 등이 공통적인 특성으로 발견되었다. 마지막 3단계에서는 학업중퇴 이후 4년이 지나서 어느 정도 적응과정이 안정화되어 있는 전형적인 적응유연적 학업중퇴생을 대상으로 초등학교, 중학교, 고등학교에 이르기까지 어떠한 발달과 적응과정을 경험했는지를 심층적으로 분석하여 적응유연성의 발달과정을 이해할 수 있었다.
Abstract
This study was performed to find the characteristics of resilient adolescents who dropped out from schools in the korean education system. A three-step analysis was carried out to achieve the purpose of this study. In the first step, the various types of school dropouts were classified and analysed through the grounded theory approach. After finding common social-psychological factors of resilient adolescent in the second step, the biography of a typical resilient adolescent was analyzed in the third and final step. There were 30 adolescents who participated in this study. These 30 individuals, whose ages ranged from 16 to 23, had dropped out or had the experience of dropping out of school in the past more than one time. 'Dropout experiences' were divided largely into five types; 'looking for alternatives', 'lonely pioneer', 'trial and error', 'escaping' and 'frustration'. 'Looking for alternatives' and 'lonely pioneer' are most likely to be found in the resilient group. They have various strengths such as comparatively high achievement in school, a sense of responsibility of their future, an optimistic personality, emotional support and provision of information from significant others, a realistic plan and preparation for the future.
