Abstract
This study aims to investigate the spelling development of English-speaking Korean learners and to find out whether or not explicit spelling education is needed. The study collected 52 writing samples from 26 learners, half of whom were beginning learners and half of whom were seasoned learners. Their spelling errors were analyzed in terms of the part of the Korean alphabet that produced the errors, error types, and the five stages of Henderson's spelling development. The research results are as follows. The number of consonant errors did not seem to decrease as proficiency developed; in contrast, the number of vowel errors did. In terms of error types, replacement occurred more than addition and omission in both consonants and vowels, regardless of proficiency. Spelling errors were analyzed based on the Developmental Spelling Theory, assuming that learners learned spelling features in the following order: pre-phonetic stage, phonetic and letter-name stage, within-word pattern stage, syllable juncture stage, and meaning derivation stage. The study found that learners learned about grammatical morphemes quite early, as they understood the letter-sound structure. This research was the first attempt to analyze English-speaking Korean learners' spelling development in the framework of developmental spelling theory. This study suggested that explicit spelling education has to be introduced since learners developed their spelling knowledge so slowly.
