Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of functional engagement, emotional engagement, and communal engagement on students’ loyalty to college courses using social media. To examine the impact, this study investigated impact variables related to students’ loyalty to their courses that utilize social media to discover an optimum model for the relationship among the variables. Design/methodology/data/approach: In this study, functional engagement, emotional engagement, and communal engagement were adopted as exogenous variables. Lecture commitment and social presence were adopted as moderating variables, and students’ loyalty to their courses were adopted as a dependent variable. Data was collected from students taking courses that utilize social media. 295 students participated and the questionnaires were analyzed using the structural equation modeling method. Findings/Results: The findings show that functional engagement, and social presence positively exert significant influence on students’ loyalty to courses that utilize social media. Value: This study provides suggestions both for practice and theory regarding the use of social media in college courses.
