사립 유치원과 국·공립 유치원 경험이 아동의 인지 발달 및 학업 능력에 미치는 영향

이 연구는 한국아동패널 데이터를 활용하여 사립 유치원과 국·공립 유치원 교육 효과가 차이를 보이는지 분석하였다. 구체적으로 국·공립 유치원을 경험한 아동이 사립 유치원을 경험했을 때 보이게 되는 학업 및 인지 능력을 추정하여 유치원 설립 유형에 따른 인과 효과를 확인하였다. 인과 효과를 추정하기 위해 유치원 선택 과정에서 발생하는 자기 선택 오류를 통제할 수 있는 경향 점수 매칭 방법을 활용하였다. 분석 결과 초등학교 1학년과 2학년 학생들의 인지 능력과 학업 수행 능력은 취학 전 사립 유치원과 국·공립 유치원 경험에 따라 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 구체적으로 사립 유치원과 국·공립 유치원을 선택할 확률이 동일한 아동을 비교 했을 때 초등학생의 어휘력, 수리 능력, 공간 지각력, 도식화 능력, 언어 능력, 창의력 점수는 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 교사가 평가한 초등학생의 국어와 수학 능력 역시 취학 전 국·공립 유치원 또는 사립 유치원 경험 여부와 관련이 없었으며, 이러한 결과는 유치원 규모와 지역에 따른 개별 분석에서도 일관되게 나타났다. 시장에서 제공되는 유아교육 서비스에 대한 회의적인 입장을 뒷받침 하는 이 연구 결과는 사립 유치원의 사회적 효용성에 대한 논의가 공론의 지평 위로 떠오를 필요가 있다는 점을 논의하고 있다.
Abstract
Purpose: Using Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC), this study examined the effect of private and public kindergarten experience on children’s learning outcomes. Method: Propensity score matching was employed in order to create a comparable sample between children who attended private and public kindergarten. This quasi-experimental study design approximates random assignment to reveal what the learning outcomes of children at elementary school would have been, on average, if they had attended private kindergarten. Result: Analysis of PSKC revealed no significant differences between children who attended private and public kindergarten on learning outcomes. Such pattern of results was consistent across cities and the size of kindergarten. Value: These findings suggest that private kindergarten need to improve the educational effectiveness.
