Abstract

This paper directly investigated U.S. newspaper articles on Ahn Jung- geun’s patriotic action, which were not covered in previous research, and based on this, examined the responses and opinions. This paper focuses largely on two aspects. First of all, he analyzed the contents based on articles and comments about Ahn Jung-geun, who was reported in the U.S. newspaper. Through this analysis of the article, we examined the sympathy of Ito’s death, the attitude and view of Ahn Jung-geun’s patriotic action in the U.S. newspaper, and the ethnic issues between Korea and Japan and tried to consider the position between Washington and Tokyo on the Manchurian issue, which was a major concern in the Far East. Next, This paper focused on the reactions of the Korean, Chinese and Japanese media and the English-language newspaper in the mainstream society, to the Hawaiian society, which has been rocked by the Ahn Jung-geun’s patriotic action. The outbreak of Ahn Jung-geun’s patriotic action tried to reveal that Hawaiian society has spread to ethnic issues between Korea and Japan as well as between Korea, China and Japan. The U.S. newspaper’s tendency to report Ahn Jung-geun’s patriotic actions is largely negative than the attempt to sympathize with or understand Koreans’ positions. The article seems to be based on the strong imperialist logic that the U.S. government was openly supportive of Japan’s invasion of Korea and that it was inevitable because it was a country that was collapsing even though it knew about Japan’s invasion of Korea. Ahn Jung-geun’s patriotic action in this era would have created an opportunity for the U.S. newspaper to reexamine the nature of Japan’s aggression and re-examine the ethnic aspirations of Koreans and the reality of Korea. Its effects and impacts would have been hard to reveal at the time, but soon after the March 1 Independence Movement, U.S. newspapers would have served as a valuable historical basis for generating friendly public opinion that understood and sympathized with Koreans and Korea’s Independence.
