Abstract

This study traces the origins of financial globalization back to a series of US policies leading to the so-called "Nixon shock," the closing of gold window, which effectively broke down the Bretton Woods regime. Three policy choices will be identified as the causes of the demise of BW embedded liberal order: increasing dependence on seigniorage for financing military hegemony; failure of capital controls; reluctance and inability to stabilize domestic economy. After analyzing each policy failures and their effects on the breakdown of BW, I will raise the necessity for a political theory of hegemonic change.
