Abstract
The instability and tension of the US-China relationship have recently surfaced due to the inconsistency of the US grand strategy toward the rising China in the post-Cold War era. Unlike the previous Bush administration which pursued strategic competitions, if not containment of China, President Obama attempted to establish more cooperative relationships with China. The Obama administration recognized the importance and power of China as a superpower even before officially launching its regime. However, their relations has become troublesome in the past several years. In fact, the concept of G2 was introduced by the US not only to invite China to cooperative relationships, but also to pressure China to follow international norms and take responsibility. China rejected the G2 concept implicitly as well as explicitly, since Chinese leadership suspects it as a disguised containment policy toward China. So, they repeatedly claimed that China was still a poor third world country. The two superpowers' conflictual relations have become more evident in Northeast and Southeast Asia. Although the US and China share the goal of maintaining the regional stability for now, the future is not guaranteed.
