Abstract

Text mining analysis revealed that since the Kim Jong Un administration in 2012, the government has steadily emphasized the construction of an economic powerhouse and the improvement of people’s lives in order to realize the promise made in the early days of the regime that the people would not tighten their purse strings again. Analysis of documents published during the period of strengthening the power base (January 1, 2012-March 30, 2013), the period of promoting economic and nuclear translation (March 31, 2013-April 20, 2018), and the period of total economic construction (April 21, 2018-January 1, 2020) suggests that the people’s lives have been improved and the economic power has been emphasizing the importance of economic power. This is because the government aims to build a socialist nation by becoming an economic powerhouse in the Kim Jong Un era, following the ideological, political and military powers that North Korea claims to have achieved during the Kim Jong Il era. Kim Jong-eun has been emphasizing the construction of an economic powerhouse and the improvement of people’s lives. During the Kim Jong Un era, North Korea promoted pragmatic economic policies emphasizing the efficient use of resources and actively promoted economic development strategies centered on bases represented by economic development zones. If the North Korean-style economic management methods, which focuses on improving the autonomy of individual economic entities and increasing incentives, represents North Korea’s inward economic policy, the 23 newly established economic development zones since 2013 show the direction of North Korea’s outward economic policy.
