Abstract

This study aims to examine the continuity of North Korea’s economic policies and diagnose their changes under the background of North Korea’s modern history, including the Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, & Kim Jong-un era. For the specialized economic policy paper Economic Research produced and published by North Korea, text mining analysis techniques, mainly LDA topic modeling, were applied in this study. The key topics of economic policies studied by North Korean economic experts for 34 years were extracted. Moreover, the characteristics of each period and topic were analyzed, and the changes in North Korea’s economy were evaluated. It seems difficult for North Korea to lead the economic reformation because the studies on “anti-reform” of the North Korean economy are superior to the studies on “reform”. However, since the 2000s, the expansion of the studies on “reform” has narrowed the gap between the “anti-reform” and the “reform” studies, and the wind of economic reform in North Korea is spreading across the land. It could be a positive factor for NK’s economic reformation and, simultaneously, a crisis factor in maintaining a socialist system, regardless of North Korea’s intention.
