Abstract

This article explores the impact of “China's rise” on East Asian regional order. Given that China had not been able to pursue an integrated policy toward East Asia during the Cold War era because it was not a pole, we can expect that “the rise of China” would lead it to form its own regional policy. By examining both its policy deliberation and policy actions, this article argues that China has begun to pursue an assertive regional policy. China has increasingly attempted not only to participate in regional cooperations but also to assume responsibilities in an effort to woo East Asian states and thereby counter American efforts to dominate the region. It further suggests that China's assertive regional policy has contributed to the deconcentration of power structure in East Asia, which was dominated by the US.
