Abstract
Against the backdrop of the recently activated debates about the new initiatives and future architecture of East Asian cooperation, the main purpose of this article is to discuss the current feature, diagnose main problems and predict future directions of East Asian regional cooperation system. This article defines the current feature of East Asian cooperation system as a ‘multi-layered pluralism’ and diagnoses that it increasingly is suffering from the problems of redundancy and ineffectiveness. On the basis of such basic diagnosis, this essay sorts out and then examines the three scenarios for the future of East Asian cooperation system, i.e., elite multilateralism/concert of East Asia, multilateral division of labor system and institutional Darwinism in terms of their basic ideas, potential and underlying difficulties. And then, investigations of the new approaches that are gaining more currency among the analysts and policy makers of East Asian cooperation follow.
