Abstract

In examining the discourse of British Imperialism in the 21th century, one thing we need to pay attention to is the existence of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of the former British Empire colonies, now 56 independent nations, that has shown a unique history of transition from the dissolution of the British Empire to the Commonwealth of Nations. The power of historical continuity can be seen in the fact that the history of the British Empire and the experiences of its colonies are still shared by many parts of the planet. In this sense, imperialism, colonialism, decolonization, and postcolonialism are still important keywords for understanding contemporary society and key discourses for understanding the UK, the Commonwealth, and the world. However, as a historian in British imperial history, I am highly skeptical that Britain that made the nationalistic decision for Brexit, would eventually return to an imperial/global outlook towards to the wider world. Moreover, it is clear that the Commonwealth countries no longer have any reason to accept Britain’s unilateral foreign policy without their own income. In this context, this article aims to answer three questions: Since when and how has Britain been writing its imperial history? How did the demise of the British Empire interact with research trends in academia, and what role does academia play in helping British society confront and reflect on its imperial history? The article starts with a chronological overview of key events in the demise of the British Empire and transformations in the study of imperialism in historical scholarship. It introduces ongoing decolonization issues in the UK, and then a discussion of academic efforts to reflect on imperialism. Ultimately, it will demonstrate that British academics play an important role in supporting the ‘Afterlife of Empire’ with the Commonwealth by showing research trends that vary according to the political changes of empire, and by providing directions for reflection on the history of empire in contemporary British society.
